Two friends fatally stabbed aboard No. 2 train Slain over trash toss

Pals heading home from a Midtown nightclub yesterday tossed their trash out a subway door, setting off a senseless slashing rampage that left two of them dead -- and added to the explosive spike in homicides around the city.
The carnage erupted at around 5 a.m., shortly after the 10 Brooklyn friends -- who had been at the trendy Cellar Bar in the Bryant Park Hotel -- boarded a southbound No. 2 train at 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue, police said.
One of the men had a bag of trash and tossed it out the door as the train stopped at 14th Street, said Brian Woods, 24, of Flatbush, Brooklyn, who was with the group.
"We apologized to them," Woods said. "We tried to tell them, 'Let's be cool about this. It's the end of the night. Everyone's going home.'The trash struck one of four men boarding the train at that stop -- and he pulled a knife, Woods said. "But they took it as an insult. They came at us with knives."
The attack proved fatal for Darnell Morel, who died on the floor of the train, and Ricardo Williams, who was pronounced dead at St. Vincent's Hospital.
Morel, who was originally from Flatbush but lived in New Jersey, and Williams, of Flatbush, were both 24.
The killer and his cohorts fled the train at Christopher Street. Two men taken into custody for questioning were released, and no weapon was recovered.
"He got stabbed over nonsense," cried Morel's mom, Florence Kwiatkowski. "He would be the one to put peace to things."
Another one of the friends, Mark Joseph, 23, also of Flatbush, was wounded in the arm and neck in the attack. He was treated at St. Vincent's and released.
"It seemed [the other group] couldn't accept 'sorry,' " Kwiatkowski said. "It's just barbaric. Who walks around with a kitchen knife? They have to find this pig. This man is a murderer."
Kwiatkowski said her son had been waiting for word on a job application at a Children's Place store in Secaucus, NJ. And Woods said Williams "just got engaged a week ago."
The violence left straphangers fearful -- and disgusted. "I feel like the city is losing its grip," said Liz McCarvill, 44, of the West Village.
"I have to take the subway at 4:30 in the morning to get to the airport. It'll be me and the people who kill each other."
Lisa Johnson, 29, of Jamaica, Queens, said, "The city is definitely going back to the '80s, with all the gangs and everything."
The slayings come amid a troubling 22 percent rise in murders in the city so far this year.

Helgen 03/29/2010 8:24 AM gwishy, I can tell you are the type as well since you automatically went into the "white" thing, because that's how a lot of your type are. You try to act defenseless when a "minority" hurts you, because you know the cops will usually believe you. How many times white cops got off free with killing anyone, even their same kind, but if it were a ethnic cop, they would get life or something. I guess you can say I am glad you feel that you are a target. Maybe if your "kind" would start acting more mature these days instead of some Cancun spring break 24/7 everywhere else except their own neighborhood, maybe everyone else would act so hostile to "whites."
Helgen 03/29/2010 8:19 AM As far as I know, those Jersey Shore yuppie fools, denim and dress shirt dudes always cause trouble, especially when they are in packs. Since only the people they were with themselves commented, that means there is a lot more that is left out. I mean, come on, if it was 10 guys throwing garbage out at 4 guys, I can clearly see who is the real culprit here. You don't get hurt for nothing.
When I lived in the east village, people; specifically the club type from midtown or any other... White collar neighborhood, they disrespect everyone and anyone and anywhere when in packs (they never start problems alone.) They make me feel like I am the minority in my own neighborhood because their friends come from Long Island or upstate and loiter in the city like it is a damn playpen for yuppie immature fools with no concern for other peoples property or neighborhood.
drdave 03/29/2010 8:17 AM When these animals are caught, take them to a subway station and let the rats finish them off like the trash that they are. These are not humans. Hairless apes maybe, but not worth a penny to continue their existence.
naro 03/29/2010 8:17 AM The nerves of the people who would throw garbage out the train AT PEOPLE. I think they got what they deserved. If they were more civilized they would not have been stabbed.
Truelies3 03/29/2010 8:14 AM The Truth speaks just that. NY Post readers are the most racist of any local tabloid. Completely ignore the context of most any article and make racist/sexist comments about almost anything.
Tyipcal 14 years old mentality.
gwishy 03/29/2010 8:12 AM Here is Obama's America! The slime rule and whites are targets of savages from the 3rd world and violent baby mama rejects!
thetruthhurts 03/29/2010 8:12 AM this is why food is not allowed on the subway.
atrainchris 03/29/2010 8:07 AM The city is infested with too many of these wackos. Getting stabbed over a bag of food of garbage. What the heck is wrong with the human society now?
Lobedawgs 03/29/2010 8:06 AM Serves the idiots right for throwing trash out of the subway. Drunken idiots. Use a garbage can next time and you won't run into any trouble. Report Abuse daydreamer41 03/29/2010 8:04 AM Obama will pardon them and give them a job with the EPA.
shiff71 03/29/2010 8:04 AM Senseless. Why can't they put the description of the murderers in the article? I'm tired of this PC krap.
cnocboy 03/29/2010 7:56 AM The blame falls on Emperor Bloomie the Wimpish who is concerned with your weight and what you eat and drink and smoke and where you sit and stand, and how you live. But oddly, not whether or not you do live. He's your typical schoolyard sissy and he's going to get us all killed because the trash has figured out that he won't do anything to them even if they get caught, which is unlikely anyway. Thanks, Bloomie-it's 1980 all over again. Giuliani-can you run again?
The Truth 03/29/2010 7:55 AM I love the early morning racism New Yorkers provide. This is a senseless killing, and no matter what race no one deserves to be slashed and murdered on a subway at any time!! But as long as its a minority then the Post readers are happy. Our Mayor is a first class jerk and so is the MTA. They increase our fares every year but cannot manage to give us a safe ride.
Dead Rabbits 03/29/2010 7:53 AM Gee all this info/top story//witnesses and yet no decription of the perps//dont we want to catch these punks?? Gee wonder why???
Bring back Dirty Harry
Chewbacca54 03/29/2010 7:46 AM Isn't there some way to keep the garbage from brooklyn and queens from entering manhattan? Report Abuse
haha 03/29/2010 7:44 AM Still think we don't need video cameras liberals? This wouldn't happen if there were cameras monitoring these thugs. They become real sissys when they think they're going to get busted. Brian Pitt
03/29/2010 7:41 AM YOU WOULD THINK THE AUTHORITIES COULD ISSUE DESCRIPTIONS OF THE KILLERS, SUCH AS APPROXIMATE HEIGHT, WEIGHT, SCARS, TATT00S, PLUS, IF THEY WERE WHITE, BLACK, ASIAN, ETC. (But then, that wouldn't be politically correct - and that's more important than catching thugs, RIGHT?)
Scott 03/29/2010 7:32 AM #1 Don't be out partying till 5:00am and take the subway.#2 Don't get loaded and throw trash out the subway door.#3 Close the clubs and bars at 2:00am.
rumrunner623 03/29/2010 7:27 AM Guess ya wont be throwing junk out of the train or any other place except the garbage can. huh ?
meishern 03/29/2010 7:22 AM Two white people chopped up by a group of African-Latinos. Where is Bernard Goetz when you need him. When is the last time you heard of Blacks or Latinos being harassed or killed by whites on a subway?
samoht 03/29/2010 7:20 AM I agree with jadeconder.
MichaelScully 03/29/2010 7:19 AM RealWorld, you piece of s..t, they didn't throw trash at people, they threw it and it mistakenly hit them. Are you an Obamaist? Are you lending legitimacy to the idea that the killers had been dissed? They "disrespected" them? WHOEVER PULLED THE KNIFE WILL BE FOUND AND JAILED FOR LIFE. If NYS was civilized, he would be executed.
Pillpoppinpuppy 03/29/2010 7:17 AM I have the solution: clearly, the have-nots need more ObamaMoney.
Haha 03/29/2010 7:16 AM Don't ever throw trash out in Newyork, sometimes it gets back up. And they want to cut NYPD staff??? LOL, it's gonna be the 80's all over again, Sharpton will enjoy this.
LawyersRscum 03/29/2010 7:16 AM No mention of who picked up the garbage! Lets get our priorities in order. Bloomey will want to know.
Thunder22 03/29/2010 7:09 AM Murdered for littering? Are you kidding me? Senseless.
TheRealWorld 03/29/2010 7:09 AM oh sure...right...they were good boys...It's New York, 5am, and you throw trash at someone. WHAT DID YOU THINK WAS GOING TO HAPPEN???
jadecondor 03/29/2010 6:58 AM Ahhh so we miss the the days of Giuliani when he kept teh streets safe. But we have the arrogance and ghetto menatility to insult police and law enforcement. This is what we get when we have a wim-p mayor and a city who kowtows to the organizations like the ACLU, NAACP, Al Sharpton etc. We have to face and admit the fact that we have an age group 15-25 of hostile, perverse young men. These "young men" I'm soory to say must be approached like the toglodites they are: vulgar, menacing, hostile, and violent. Lets not also forget we have "young ladies" almost in the same age group whom act in the same manner and must be treated that way. BTW who the F do these people think they are tossing garbage ono a platform, this is no way to act either.
Joel Rifkin 03/29/2010 6:39 AM Simple, they shouldn't have littered.
nyrocks 03/29/2010 6:39 AM All we are asked has citizens is to contain our trash in a trash can. Keep it clean people.
nyrocks 03/29/2010 6:37 AM What a bunch of classless jerks throwing trash out like that. Why would it be acceptable to to treat our cities like garbage dumps! Ok you should not go around stabbing people, but I do not feel to bad for those that died. It infuriates me I see low life's tossing trash out of their car windows everyday, smokers tossing their cigarettes filters in the gutter and sidewalks. Let alone throwing your trash out of a subway door and hitting someone! The more I think about it I tend to lean towards the side that the guy who was hit with the trash was a bit justified.
asphaltninja 03/29/2010 6:19 AM Sad story but the city is still nowhere near the way it once was and never will be. It was a lawless zoo in the early 90s, they chould've dedicated an entire newspaper to daily crime alone. I'll take it the way it is (or even with a rise in crime) over the way it was when I was in high school anyday of the week.
