Daily Short list v Short Interest report

Apples & oranges.

Daily Short Sales: Aggregate reported share volume of executed short sale trades during regular trading hours.
http://regsho.finra.org/regsho-Index.html

According to FINRA, every short is designated as such:

Z Dealer Sold Short
C Selling Customer Sold Short
P Contra Side Sold Short

Short Interest (Bi-monthly report):

> The number of shares of a particular stock that have been sold short but have not yet been repurchased (NOT yet settled).

> The total amount by which a single seller or all sellers are short in a particular stock or commodity or in the market as a whole.

The idea of Short Interest is to give investors a picture of how many shares short are out there, which might indicate a possible minefield: Selling pressure. Hmmm, all those shares shorted. Wonder if somebody knows something is rotten in XXXX. Conversely (somewhat weirdly), if it's a large amount, some investors take it as a positive sign because they know the shares will eventually have to be covered.
