Actually, when you trade a car to a dealership, you must sign an odometer statement verifying that the miles are correct. You must also sign a release of title showing you are the actual owner. IF it turns out the miles were rolled back, the original seller of the car is liable, not the dealership. So, to make a fair comparison once again, I'd say Urbie and the transfer agent were responsible for making sure the shares were legit, which of course they weren't and were found guilty of.

Apparently you don't understand the difference between a dealer who owns the car and a broker who is just a middleman.

In the case of stocks, it is the company and their TA that are responsible for the validity of the shares.
