There is no coastal range to the east of salinas, i.e., it is on the southwestern border of the central valley. You drive down 101 and pass through all the towns on the nw to se border of the valley: gilroy, paso robles, before it goes to the coast and through the mountains.
Get a map. Try interpreting it. Pay close attention to the colors if you can afford one of those.
