For me 1mg works best if I don't have 8 hours to devote to sleeping. 3-5mg and I won't wake easily at all. I know some people who it doesn't work at all for...Hard to believe when I've seen what it can do to me. :0
Melatonin works best is you use it every other 5-7 days. The body will stop making natural melatonin when you take the suplement to often. If we're talking sleeping aids, nothing is better/safer than antihistamine Chlor-Pheniramine.
