I understand what you are saying, and it is a pretty good analogy, but the difference is that the government is not like a parent. I think some individuals in the government care about people and some function of government does help people, but it is a system that ultimately has no heart and soul and does not care for our well being. Control and power starts off as a temporary fix, but c'mon, once government gets a taste of control and power, are they really going to give it back once the "house is in order"? (Haven't you seen StarWars Episode 2? :-) )
Choice 3 on your list would only work if the government actually loved us like a good parent loves his son. In reality, I think we need to hit rock bottom and the government needs to let us blame them for not bailing us out with our own money.
