Lucent does not achieve an end to end solution by licensing Tantivy IP for cdma2000..Only Licensing with IDCC for cdma2000, WCDMA and TD-SCDMA serves their long term goal..

Lucent expects 3G licenses in China by end of 2004
November 6, 2003

American mobile equipment supplier Lucent Technologies said they expected China to issue third generation mobile licenses by the end of 2004.

China has the most mobile users in the world and firms are keen to break into the market over there. The government has been reluctant to issue licenses despite many interests from network equipment makers. Many expect the government to hand out four licenses but firms are angered by the lack of indication as to when they will award them.

Amer G. El-Nahi, a senior Lucent executive for the Asia-Pacific region, anticipates issuing to be in late 2004. "… right now we think it's probably by the end of next year," he said.

He added that there have been estimates that China is worth $12 billion in the next five years.

Although officials said the government would only handout licenses when the market is ready and the technology is mature, industry watchers say they are delaying the schedule to give the home grown TD-SCDMA technology more time to develop. The two main 3G technologies in use at the moment are WCDMA and CDMA2000.

Mobile service provider China Unicom is taking the CDMA2000 route as Lucent has been supplying CDMA2000 equipment for the operator in six provinces. El-Nahi said Lucent does not see a requirement for TD-SCDMA but "if it does come out we'll be happy to support it".

Future 3G license holders in China may have the freedom of choosing either WCDMA or CDMA2000 networks and deploy TD-SCDMA as a complementary network.

I hope IDCC will make some $$$$ from Lucent from Tantivy patents
