Mediatek is much older than Spreadtrum

Mediatek established in 1997 (listed on TSE in 2001), Spreadtrum in 2001...4 years

and -incidentally- i believe it is Korean, not Chinese.

Mediatek was established in Taiwan ROC with a good portion of their R&D in Mainland China.

SPRD is the only Chinese fab that IDCC has licensed that I am aware of.

SPRD is fabless...and yes, the only Chinese chipset company the company has licensed.

So why do you say that IDCC "does not need" Sprd to access the Chinese market?

Even though the company has filed and been granted patents within China, IDCC licenses on a global convenience basis with very few exceptions in the past (especially around 3G). The companies that are the meat of the hit parade operate on a global basis, not just in China.....we have much stronger leverage with those companies from their activities outside of China...which leads to covered product within China. Spreadtrum can help, yes, but I'd rather not be dependent on them....or worse yet, have a company turn away from them because of the Ts and Cs in the IDCC/Spreadtrum agreement.

The relationship has opened some doors....but we lost Donald Boles who was a big part of the company's Chinese efforts.

Since SPRD's low point 2nd quarter, they announced that they were selling chips to Samsung.

Their relationship with Samsung goes back further than that. Spreadtrum is one of the few that has TD-SCDMA chipsets (prior to IDCC relationship).

They also advised that their 3rd qtr. revenues will be greatly improved.

From $16M....I certainly hope so as they get their 3G sales going.

Since they have at their fingertips IDCC's knowhow, I'm betting on them.

Seems the relationship had a rocky start and had to be redone?

Sprd could have been brought about a year ago (after the IDCC license) for $.70.

Agreement with Spredtrum was signed Jan 22, 2008. The closing price of SPRD on that date was $8.58. The price of SPRD 1 year ago was $3.01. It then dropped to .67 on Nov 17, 2008.....and yes - it has done very well this year.

It closed today at $4.18 - a new recovery high. About a 600% move! I sense that there is more good news to come. IMVHO.

MY opinion that I've expressed before on this board to a some that inquired....unless you have a very specific knowledge of this particular Chinese company and the very specific market they operate in, and their relationships with their gov't and others....investing in their 2 year old NASDAQ offering is risky. Why did they drop so much? Do you understand that aspect of the investment as well?
