OGDENSBURG — As crews dismantle the collapsed roof on the storage facility at the back of Hacketts Power Place at 1301 State St., the front building is being prepped to become an auction house for surplus merchandise.

Starting next month, the now empty building will be used to sell lights, hardware, fixtures and anything else left over from the three Hacketts stores that closed over the past five months.

"Around that building are tractor-trailers filled with fixtures and things that we're going to empty into the building," said Herbert L. Becker, vice president and chief operating officer of Hacketts. "We're doing an auction because it is fixtures and tools and things that we don't usually sell in the stores. A professional auctioneer is better at moving merchandise than within a retail environment."

Hacketts officials said they have asked Kip E. Blanchard, of Blanchard's Auction Service, Potsdam, to run the auctions, but according to Mr. Blanchard there is no official agreement. Once they start, Mr. Becker expects to have auctions at the facility for several months. Stores in Watertown, Pulaski and Canton closed as the store chain, which is owned by Seaway Valley Capital Corp., struggled to pay back a $5 million loan from Wells Fargo.

The front building, where the auctions will be held, is being cleaned and emptied. All of the rental equipment once available at the site will be available at the Ogdensburg store, Mr. Becker said.

The back building, which was a storage facility until it collapsed in the winter of 2007, is being taken down because it is an eyesore, Mr. Becker said. He said there are no plans for that space.

According to town of Oswegatchie Code Enforcement Officer Timothy C. Tuttle, the roof had been a concern of the town's for several years, but issues with insurance led to holdups in demolishing it.

"It should have been done a long time ago," Mr. Tuttle said.
