From what I understand at this early point, Wave's OpenID solution will evolve from supporting today's OpenID "URL-based identity" to one that supports an OpenID information card. I believe the goal is to merge OpenID with info card.

I don't know how supporting OpenID info card will change id.wave, but suffice it to say today's id.wave is early stage. Imo, don't be concerned about how easy or hard it is to get "enabled" with today's version. Furthermore id.wave will be implemented first by predominantly enterprise and gov't TPM users vs. non-enterprise individual users.
