There is another, non-technical explanation on this Itanium delay. Intel is changing its direction to maximize yields rather than binsplits. They need to drive Itanium ASP below $1500 simultaniously increasing the volume. The 2 Ghz chip is not important if its price will be not competitive.

It's more and more hard to fing people to pay $20k for a top model 2P server when they can get more mainstream 4P server with middle-range processors inside for $10k.
