thanks lostcowboy. safe mode didn't work, and neither did the start bar trick. but, i was able to get the bugger. i had to download the AntiVir from the thread header. Thanks to a stroke of luck and some excellent programming skills, the anti-virus of this particular program started with a scan immediately after installation. no re-boot. no need to even double click on an icon.
this saved my ass. i think i was looking at a full re-install otherwise.
then i had to uninstall and reinstall zonealarm, my other virus software, and for good measure changed my passwords for my trading accounts and for my online banking.
i will be sending them an email thanking them and getting out the credit card as well. IMO, everyone should check out this program.
