When I asked Scottrade about loaning my shares out of a margin account they told me that they can only loan out the shares if I have an outstanding margin balance.

Anyone else have different information?

Seems like each broker has a different set of rules.

you will need to execute the necessary paperwork to establish a separate cash account and move the shares there

a phone call alone will not do it
