In 1977 Visa's market share of the bank card business was 40 percent and MasterCard was 60 percent.

In 2006, before American Express took their recent actions to cut-off many of their customers, Visa had a 44% share of the US credit card market in 2006, compared to MasterCard’s 31%, AmEx’s 20% and Discover’s 5%. Even at that, a large portion of the AmEx business is co-branded Visa cards.

Current antitrust statutes merely need to be enforced.

But there I go forgetting that Americans want bank shareholders to get a special sweetheart deal. What a culture.
