I do not believe they are getting a salary. Many firms agree to pay for services with their stock.

Example:

If I agree to do a certain amt of work for $5,000 and the company I am doing the work for has stock at a pps of $1.00
the agreement is for 5,000 shares.

I do the work, get paid the shares. I sell the shares to pay
my bills. This is how it works, simple business.
