AMD is not the motherboard manufacturer, so any costs are likely not being paid by them.

You're right; that was dumb of me.

But there are marketing programs called "co-op" dollars for market partners, which Intel definitely does. For example, if Intel wanted to promote a new technology, like Nocona-AMD64, and that new technology required motherboard manufacturers to develop and promote new motherboards, Intel would typically provide engineering support and marketing co-op dollars to help the mb makers build and sell their products. The mb makers have to show Intel what their marketing program is going to be for the new boards, and where they're going to spend marketing dollars. If the program fits Intel's goals, Intel will provide money earmarked for the vendor's marketing program. It's all part of supporting the ecosystem.

I don't know if AMD has the money or the marketing organization to do this.

upc, embarc - Should be pretty easy to tell. If it's paid by the MB makers, then it'd be arranged by brand; high bid for best placement. If, however, it's arranged perhaps by CPU/socket type with no regard for MB maker brand, then perhaps AMD funded it. OR maybe even by chipset brand, with nVidia or Via funding it.
