Tiger -

I think microsoft is really waiting for AMD to get its act together...when AMD can manufacture 10+ million A64 processors starting in the end of Q1 05 I think the 64 bit OS will be released...

I've been watching Microsoft since IBM inherited the Seattle Computer CPM-based OS and gave it to Gates to develope into MS-DOS 1.0. Never underestimate Microsoft's ability to miss deadlines by a mile!

Microsoft is in the middle of an extensive re-write of WindowsXP and Windows2003 to build security throughout the whole thing. It is taking much longer than they had bargained, and everything else is on hold. WindowsXP for AMD64 is based on the Windows2003 Server SP1 code base, and that won't release until March, if the latest word is to be believed.

You did notice that AMD will have 90nm in full swing during H2, and now has enough production to reenter the value market? No, there are no issues with the AMD production right now.

Microsoft is just being Microsoft. Never been able to meet a schedule, just as certain as the sun will rise in the morning!

...why should Microsoft screw themselves over going into the major earnings section of the year when AMD can only produce 5% of the 64 bit market...

Anyone know if Microsoft capitalizes their development costs? If they do, it may make sense to hold back the release until there's a potential for more volume.
Personally I think they're choking on SP2 & NX. They've been sloppy for so long they're having a problem getting out of the hole they dug for themselves. Anyone wanna bet they have internal code dependencies on the existence of buffer overruns? Much like the Catholic "Original Sin" doctrine, they've all been corrupted by the "Original Kludge" and Saint Bill the Architect can't bail them out.
