#57376 RE: PanicButton #57375

When I went to the ATA conference in New Orleans, all the exhibitors except one were inside the exhibitors area. The ATA had a few booths set up outside in the hallway of the Convention Center and another booth with video production equipment. This booth was right by the exit. When I left the first night, I noticed that someone was giving an interview and the monitor showed that they were a "Fatigue Management Expert". The booth was Big Truck TV. I was told they are the Google of the Trucking Industry. You can go to their website and find information about Trucking Topics which is paid for by advertisers. I have monitored their site since to see if the interview with the Fatigue Expert has been placed on their site. I still have not found this interview but did find this video on Lane Departure Devices. It gives a good explanation on how lane departure devices work in trucks.

Although we have debated the technology is not the same as the CRAM since it detects fatigue by driver behavior (weaving across lanes), it is available and many feel it will prevent fatigue related accidents. I still feel it is better to detect actual fatigue. Some fatigue related accidents will not be detected by this kind of device such as rear end accidents. I attended a DOT teleconference that discussed land departure devices and found out they do not work when the roads are covered with snow and ice. This is a time when fatigue can lead to accidents because of the stress related to winter driving. Here is the video for the lane departure device:

Here is another video that discusses fatigue but it primarily talks about a company that puts there drivers in motel rooms instead of sleeping in their trucks.
