Garmin, due to better than originally expected sales performance in the North American market since the Black Friday weekend, estimates that its 2008 total sales volume of GPS PNDs will increase by 50% from 2007 to 18 million units, according to the company's Asia Pacific marketing director Tony An.

Garmin's GPS PND sales volumes in the Asia Pacific market in 2008 will also grow by at least 50%, An indicated. In the Taiwan market, Garmin had a market share of 25-30%, next to 40% for Mio, in the first half of 2008, but the gap shrank considerably in the second half due to Garmin expanding its retail network, An pointed out.

In addition to GPS PNDs, Garmin will launch Nuvifone, its first GPS-enabled handset, in the Taiwan market in the second quarter of 2009, An noted. Garmin also plans to launch self-developed Android handsets in the second half of 2009, with production to be outsourced.

Samsung’s Android Smartphone Will Be Out Next Year

If an unconfirmed rumor is to be believed, Sprint and T-Mobile USA will release a Samsung model running Google's Android OS before the middle of 2009. The news was first reported on the South Korean news site ET News.

The new devices by Sprint and T-Mobile, like all other Android-based devices, will offer mobile access to many of Google’s services, including Gmail and its mapping, and instant message services. The tablet-shaped smartphones will have prominent touchscreens, but will be without built-in keyboards. These models will be similar in design to the existing Instinct for Sprint and their Behold phone for T-Mobile - significantly different from the inside, but same from the outside.

"We are accelerating the development process for the Google phone in order to meet the specific need of local carriers," ET News quoted an anonymous Samsung official as saying. "We will be able to release the Google phone in the second quarter of the next year in the U.S. market."

Android does have other manufactures that are part of its Open Handset Alliance. Handset manufactures including LG Electronics Inc and Motorola Inc could also launch their first mobile phone using the platform in 2009. The alliance has 47 companies to date.

The Iomega StorCenter ix2 comes in 1TB ($300) and 2TB ($480) versions, with gigabit Ethernet, dual USB ports, optional Bluetooth, and a new homegrown Linux implementation that incorporates RSA security and file-sharing software.

Earlier this year, however, Marvell included the StorCenter 1TB on a long list of NAS devices the company released that run on its "Orion" system-on-chips (SoCs), which use Marvell's ARM9-based Feroceon micro-architecture. That explains the switch from Windows Server, which currently only supports x86 architectures.
