They called OJ Simpson liable in the civil trial and "not guilty" in the criminal trial. I have seen civil trials lead to criminal trials but usually it is the other way around.

Geez GP, it sounds more like a case legal system semantics.

In a civil trial the respondent may be found "liable" or "at fault" or some similar expression. Sometimes respondents who lose their cases are required to pay "triple damages," the legal fees of the plaintiff, and some sort of punitive damages, which are based upon the seriousness of the bad behavior.

IMO, a respondent being 'at fault' is still guilty of committing intentional wrongdoings.
