=================================

In short, educators are dealing with a very different population than they had years ago. Crack babies, severe discipline problems, unsupportive parents or no parent involvement at all contributes to the problems. My mother told me that when she went to school if she got in trouble at school, when she got home she got in trouble again. It is not rare today for students to do something unacceptable in school, be disciplined, then have a parent go to the school and verbally attack (or worse) the teacher. I have taught grades 2-9 and college. My daughter now teaches 3rd grade. We have a significant amount of experience in education in our family. It's a different world.

Regarding geography...yes, they do teach it. However, when I watch Jay Leno and see his Jay Walk where he asks current event questions and those related to geography, I think it's a disgrace how little some people know about what should be basic to all.

Public schools work everywhere that our communities are healthy and decent places to raise children. There are however many parts of our larger cities and even some suburban areas that have been severely neglected and simply don't have the resources to maintain minimal standards. You wouldn't live there. Many would fear simply driving through such neighborhoods. I'm talking about parts of our country where NOTHING works and they're not all that hard to find.
