Hi AIMster, "Ultimate Buy-And-Hold Strategy........... I liked that article very much. Yes it seems as though the overall portfolio is reduced in volatility as my own IRA is showing these days. However, the individual components still tend to move to the beat of their own drum. So, while AIM might not like the "total portfolio" as a single entity to manage, it seems to like the individual bits and pieces quite a bit.
I'll see if I can update the web page before the close of business today. http://www.aim-users.com/etfunds.htm The structure of this retirement account was based upon that article. My feeling is that if it was an "okay" buy and hold strategy, then it should benefit from some AIMing of the components.
My IRA is just big enough in total value to sustain the 10 sectors as viable individual AIM managed slices. Even so, the minimums for trading in that account are over 10% of stock value for 7 of the ten components. As the account grows, the minimum trade value relative to account slice will fall below the 10% mark eventually.
It's been an interesting exercise so far using that article as the basis of building a "real time" portfolio. I was impressed with the fact that each further subdivision of their hypothetica account into a new asset class improved total return to some degree. The overall account is now more broadly diversified than at any time since I first opened an IRA. I should count up the total number of individual stock issues that are represented in that portfolio some time!
So, as wild as some of the components have been, the overall account has had relatively smooth sailing. It remains to be seen if, going forward it grows at a reasonable rate compared to more bullish markets.
