Is Wave also implicated on the "fingerprint readers that complies with Federal Information Processing Standards"(?)

http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/08/12/more-info-about-the-new-dell-latitude-notebooks/

Incorporating a wide range of new technology, Dell’s new Latitudes feature:

Exclusive ControlVault solution – intelligent security sub-processors with embedded non-volatile storage that centralizes and helps protect user credentials and security keys in a single hardened security “vault” away from the systems main drive;

The E6500 is the only laptop with both a contact-less Smart Card reader and a fingerprint readers that complies with Federal Information Processing Standards; and,
Simplified IT with compatible peripherals, adapters, docking and robust manageability features across the entire portfolio.

More recently, silicon manufacturers have begun to integrate TPM functionality into existing parts, a practice that greatly reduces the cost but also has a slight negative effect on security. Examples include integration with the Super I/O (Winbond), the network chip (Broadcom), and even the processor (Transmeta).

Although integrated beats discrete on cost, discrete could still maintain 10-20% of the market over time if it is sold as being more resistant to hacking. Having a part that meets Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 4 (FIPS-4) will be a requirement in some cases (e.g., federal agency bids) and desirable in others (e.g., central banks). Only a discrete part will be able to meet this more stringent security standard.

Dell finally BRANDING security and "Control Vault" is perfect for IT staff. IMO, this will dramtiaclly boost number of questions from IT like, "What is this TPM & Control Vault? How how will it BENEFIT me/company?").

IT love control...just don't make them think more work and they're in...

Dell first to the plate...Intel???

Barge, I think you hit the nail on the head.

If Wave is getting more money, Dell has to

be getting something for it. And I think it's

more of Waves expertise. I still think SKS

does't appear that concerned about money.

barge, re: ControlVault !!!.............

You've hit the nail on the head !!! This IS Wave!! But,
Wave is unable to do a PR explaining this FACT to the world because this is Dell's attempt to "Dell-brand" and launch a security solution on their new E-platform.

Wave has been working with Dell for the past nine months on this. Included in this solution is Dell’s new Control Point..which is an integrated set of functions including the TPM, a new biometric ‘match on chip’ finger print sensor, hardware for contactless smart card (which gets you access to your new E series), FDE drive support, and some additional functions, including the Control Vault. Wave’s ETS software is one of the key components for implementing support for many, but not all of the new security functions in Control Point. Wave’s software will ship with every platform and the ERAS server is an essential element of remote management for a number of the features of Control Point.

It is THE REASON Wave gets paid 80% more for every unit shipped.

Also as important, and I think I understand this correctly, it is backwards compatible and that represents a billion-and-a-half-dollar upgrade market. Wave is meeting with 250 Dell salespeople starting tomorrow.

Once people start to understand this, I think you are correct in that the stock will blast past a buck.

barge, just viewed the video for a second time. Now that we know wave is involved it sounds all the better. For those interested, cut to the 4-minute mark if you want to get to the good part. Thanks for the link.
