It equates to doing BOTH a Electro-cardiogram AND a biopsy.Are both necessary to detrermine that surgery is needed and where best to open up the chest?

Why drill exploratory wells?

To see if there's oil down there. Seismic show traps and potential oil water contacts, but that doesn't mean there's oil.

Plus, the type of rock, its permeability, etc. all play a role in their production strategy (well fracturing, etc).

They need that data to best exploit what's down there.
