avoids the question of how many employees are left at this point, even after admitting he knows the answer. We know they were down to only seven recently so I think the fact that he doesn't want to admit where they are now is very revealing.
Of course if they are down to only 1 or 2 at this point it would explain how they are still alive. After all it wouldn't cost much at all to have a couple guys working from home, or another office, "part time". They could go on indefinetly in this manner keeping the illusion of a real company alive.
It's interesting how much information you can get from a non-answer at times.
