Spin - regarding Intel Capital.

In general, it is true that they do not invest in public companies. However, that is "in general." There are exceptions. You can see a list of the companies they invested in on the Intel Capital site.

They also invest in subsidiaries of public companies where the goal is to spin off the sub from the parent when the term sheets are all complete. I did a stint for one such company in 1999. It was a sub of a very large company and once the term sheets were completed with Intel Capital and others, it was spun off from the parent. At that point, the parent company was just like another investor.
