Good morning Melsup,

You MAY find that deleting unwanted/unneeded files from your harddrive would speed things up. Try to keep your harddrive at least 25% "free" - . Perhaps the most obvious action is to "defrag" your harddrive.

Also, make sure you aren't running a lot or any "extraneous" applications that take up CPU and memory resources.

Would swapping out the HD with an E7k60 make a noticeable difference? I haven't a clue.

The short answer is "no". The speed improvement will be too little to be worthwhile. (or even noticed)

On the hardware side speed in any computer is limited by several factors such as processor speed, I/O bus speed, hard drive speed, RAM memory speed, etc. Normally they are balanced to work well together.

Improving one of them (the hard drive in this case) will only transform the others into bottlenecks.

The way to improve speed is to act on all of them at the same time, and the best (and cheapest) way to do that is to buy a new system. (No breaks here...)

That said you can improve speed acting on the Software side. Jetcityrandy advise is quite good.

A big slow-down factor is the number of hidden processes that install themselves in your computer without you even noticing, and run constantly in the background slowing things down. Some of them are legit, (if oftentimes unnecessary) and many are not. It's quite difficult to spot them. (And even more difficult to determine if they are needed by your programs or not) Ad-Aware (a free program) can help you get rid of many of them. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

I usually wait till around Xmas to buy new systems as I found out that prices are consistently lower around that time. Last time it was possible to get a low-end Toshiba laptop for around $650. I expect to be able to get one for $500 this coming Xmas.
