#59641 RE: ezmony #59639

Biogasoline is a very sexy topic lately. Two challenges jump right up in its face though. First is cost which is a real bugger. Two reports I have (thank you USSE for inspiring them) place the price around $4.25/gal. (net refinery cost) using pyrolysis oil costing $1.20/gal. But those numbers ignore any value of possible byproducts. Your article is thin on process details and may be more or less efficient.

Even more interesting is the fact that there is no such thing as biogasoline in the industry yet. No ASTM standard at all. In order for a novel fuel to reach the market will take from 5 to 8 years to get through all the testing and certifications necessary such as our old friend the EPA.

How long engine makers will take to embrace it will also be fun to watch. A major govt. push combined with $100-plus oil may speed up the whole thing -- as soon as someone starts the process.
