InterDigital's Goldberg not afraid of change
Peter Key
Staff Writer

KING OF PRUSSIA -- Accountants usually aren't thought of as change agents, but that's what Howard Goldberg considers himself.

"I've always been comfortable with change," said Goldberg, an accountant and lawyer who has been CEO of InterDigital Communications Corp. since 2000.

InterDigital certainly has undergone some big changes since Goldberg's been running it. When he took the helm of the developer of wireless communications technology, it was on its way to posting an annual loss of $48.3 million on revenue of $56.9 million.

In the first three quarters of last year, InterDigital earned $33.4 million on revenue of $89.9 million. That's quite a turnaround, considering that InterDigital would have earned about $5.6 million in 2000, except for a $53.9 million charge caused by an accounting change. What's more impressive is that the turnaround was accomplished over a period that included probably the worst slump the telecommunications industry has ever seen.

As a result of InterDigital's performance, Goldberg, who grew up in Overbrook Park, was named CEO of the Year by the Eastern Technology Council at its annual Enterprise Awards banquet in November. Council CEO Diane Strunk cited Goldberg's "vision, innovation and outstanding success in leading the growth of InterDigital" as reasons he won the award.

Despite Goldberg's accomplishments, InterDigital still isn't in the league of the company to which it's most often compared, San Diego-based Qualcomm Inc., which has a market capitalization of around $40.8 billion, as opposed to InterDigital's roughly $1.1 billion.

Whether InterDigital can reach that league remains to be seen.

The company's biggest triumph under Goldberg was settling a lawsuit with Swedish handset maker Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson over royalties. When announced in March, InterDigital said the settlement could result in it receiving between $360 million and $440 million within 12 months because its licensing agreements with Nokia Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. would be affected.

But in July, Nokia asked the International Chamber of Commerce's International Court of Arbitration to determine how much it owes InterDigital and, in November, Samsung followed suit. As a result, the companies could wind up paying InterDigital much less than InterDigital originally predicted.

Although Goldberg has only been able to call the shots at InterDigital since he became CEO, he has helped shape the company's direction since he joined it in 1993.

His initial position was general counsel but, in 1995, he was named president of the InterDigital subsidiary that owns the company's patent portfolio. While there, he began to shape the licensing strategy that recently has begun serving InterDigital well. Among other things, that strategy calls for InterDigital to get involved in developing the standards used in various methods of wireless communications, thereby forcing makers of products that comply with those standards to license its technology.

In addition to the licensing, Goldberg wants the company to begin building products that use its intellectual property. To accomplish that, InterDigital is putting much of its research money into potential products.

"We're going to be constantly reinventing ourselves, but not needlessly," Goldberg said. "We're going to be reinventing ourselves in smart ways."
