"I think we are in for a lot more confusion before this becomes as clear as mud."

VH,

I think two things have happened based on the recently published findings:

1) It should now be clear to everyone that Dell is NOT doing the selling for Wave. They are doing the lead generation. Now, not only will Wave need to be called in for the upgrade sale, they will be called in for the FDE sale for large customers. (See point 2)

2) The reports will put large prospects into an "analysis paralysis" mode. As you said, things will be "as clear as mud" and people will want definitive answers before making large investments in the technology, IMO. This will mean longer sales cycles in general and more resources required by Wave.

VH, RE: "The NYTIMES says the TCG solution is hackable."

The credibility of NY Times/Slimes articles has been somewhat questionable as of late.

But it is definitely time for a major public intervention on the parts of Seagate, Dell and the TCG as a whole to make things clear.

VH, all is well, and the best to you to. I don't think we've heard the end of this. On their last CC, the Seagate CEO stated that the Fed (he did not specify which area)had been trying to break into the FDE drive for 6months-year, with no luck. He than qualified something to the effect that if you had a bunch of mainframes going at it 24/7 for a year...than only a slight maybe.

Anyway, his point was that it was unhackable. And certainly unbreakable to the degree that there was any practicality in trying to break into a hard drive FDE.

Software FDE has just been proven to be breakable in 10minutes with a can of compressed air, and some technilogical savy.

I think we will see a response from Seagate/Dell clarifying some of this. We've had SKS quoted in these articles, you'd think at some point Seagates PR team will get in the press
and clarify the difference and mainly characterize the difference between SOFTWARE FDE and HARDWARE FDE.

THEM: A can of compressed air and 10 minutes can break software FDE.

US: The Fed has been trying to break FDE for 6 months using 'x' number mainframes 24/7 no luck.

Re: NY TIMES comment on trusted computing

From the article:

“But they said they had proved that so-called Trusted Computing hardware, an industry standard approach that has been heralded as significantly increasing the security of modern personal computers, does not appear to stop the potential attacks.”

It looks like the writer needs a better copy-editor in addition to a fuller understanding:

“But they said they had proved that so-called Trusted Computing hardware…does not appear to stop the potential attacks.”
