I am wondering if someone can explain how the monthly short interest totals are generated.

Do the monthly short interest numbers include naked shorts? If so, where do the numbers come from? Are the naked short positions reported at all? I have always assumed that the reported short numbers reflect the "legitimate" shorts since the brokerages that report the numbers presumably are reporting positions for which they legitimately have borrowable shares available.

Of course the intent of my question is to get a better handle on whether the curent 3,900,000+ Wavx short position includes or does not include some number of nakeds.
