Alea:

Re this: Touché!
I'm not trying to be dismissive when I say I think these are aboriginally Rovian emanations, distributed by the usual means. What's good is bad and what is bad is good. The Republican machine is beginning to become visible. I'll grant you that. These guys are working on their talking points.

I admit that at one time I fancied a professional role in the Republican political machine, but never followed through.

Counterpoint:
Rove, the evil genius whose machinations catapulted the dopey Texas gunslinger into the White House twice? They say stereotypes have a kernel of truth, I guess, but this one gives Rove too much credit and Bush too little. It also mocks the gullible electorate.

Conclusion:
I can't argue with you that Obama may be a better man than most and that he seems to be thoughtful and is a gifted orator. I'm tempted to hope in Obama too, but, recognizing my own humanity, that makes me step back and reconsider. Since we Christians are not to put our trust in princes, I instinctively distrust anyone popularly anointed as a prince, and invested with so much spiritual energy as to evoke an enthusiasm that has messianic overtones. And Obama does not try to disavow the spiritual aspect of his appeal, but rather feeds it with some of his rhetoric.
