I believe human beings are intrinsically tribal. We defend territory as a tribe. We do in Rome as the Roman tribe does.

The only was to change tribalistic behavior is to change the definition of the tribe or at least broaden it.

As the saying goes -- In the foxhole everybody is a member of the tribe!

I don't really see US politics as a choice between virtues. The virtue is often in the tension between competing principles. And that point of tension oscillates from one side to another over time. After GWB, it isn't surprising that all the remaining candidates can be characterised as somewhat liberal.
