HM, Re: x86-64 fits better here than IPF until IPF hits the critical mass of apps that the target consumer wants to run. In some areas, IPF already has done this, in others, there is still lots of work to be done.

I agree with you here. In your example, x86-64 fits better. I'm not so sure that will be the case a year from now, however.

HailMary, that isn't the way most developers work. If, some day, effective IPF graphics workstations are sucessfully targetted towards CAD and similar markets, then those workers will have an IPF machine to run their specialized programs and an AMD64 PC (or laptop) to run everything else.

Just like having a Sun workstation next to a PC.

(However, Sun may have a thing or two to say about that scenerio...)
