You may be right. I know a lot of these EDA vendors are porting to both IPF and Opteron with equal priority.

There are other workstation markets where you'll find similar problems. The movie and music industry uses a lot of x86 apps running on Xeon workstations, and I don't think IPF has done much of anything there. This is a place where 64 bit is needed, just like EDA. It is a natural progression to x86-64, and now Intel can play there too.
