Great minds think alike. I'm not crazy about Vegas but every time someone comes to visit from the E.Coast they want to go. I used to drive out in my camper and show them Vegas then go camping out at the Hoover Dam. There are some interesting ghost towns and old mining towns worth visiting between Vegas and So.Calif, but the glitz and glitter of Vegas itself doesn't do much for me. Have fun.
Skip Hoover Dam and go to the Grand Canyon... It is awesome indeed. I recommend taking one of the day Bus trips from Vegas for max. viewing if you have never been.
