OT: I'm in SW Virginia as well, on the Blackwater portion of Smith Mt. Lake.
It's a wooded area near farm land, and we get deer, turkey, fox, rabbit, squirrel, and a host of birds and small stuff on my property all the time. I see bear tracks (sometimes with cubs) about every other year, but haven't actually seen a bear.
If you've got vegetables plus fruit and nut trees on this property, you could live on what you grow and shoot and catch in the lake, no problem. Not a lot of work to it either, except maybe putting stuff up for winter.
We don't ---- I said you COULD!
