Thanks for stating the situation so clearly. Let me see if I'm reading you right using the Chinese/Vista/Seagate possibility.

You will be able to buy a Seagate FDE drive in China with the Vista OS on it. However, if you don't have "Some software" -- to manage the pre-boot encryption you need Secude or Wave or Utimaco as a minimum....and if you further want to centrally manage the keys using the TPM and its future ability to be interoperable and provide audit trails and NAC possibilities you might as well add the Embassy Trust Suite from the start.....

Therefore-- Lenovo and Fujitsu and those white box makers and maybe Acer over on Taiwan either need to supply it or make you figure out the software options on your own....NOT a great way to build customer satisfaction and trust.

I guess the question is does MSFT need to check the code with the machine just once and thus not require encryption beyond the first boot-up or is something else going on here?

Meanwhile, the world of NTT and Hitachi remains silent.

Thanks Ispro...

Clears it up. If MSFT is solving their fears with the FDE, you would think they would want it to be secure forever.
$ 40 billion in lost sales is a lot of peanut butter.

Last question - Can MSFT use Wave for FDE and the machines still use the TPM and software solution mandated by the government ?

If it can, thinking MSFT may want to keep the solution local.

Thanks again.
