It means that having less shares outstanding makes those shares owned by other shareholders more valuable. When earnings are calculated on a per share basis, having less shares outstanding makes the eps rise for those shares currently outstanding.

mattR,

took the words right outa my mouth. and i've been playing with stocks for decades. let's see...if they're restricted, then they haven't been put on the market. thus, no impact on pps. slightly nice signal to public/shareholders that CEO is trying to reduce total share count and is not insensitive to dilution issues. otherwise, significance is a tad murky to me. lol. i live in denmark, it is almost always murky here.

Retiring shares, even if they are restricted, should have a positive effect on the PPS over a long period of time.
