Keith

Defining your security level is the important item that you need to think about, if you have questions I can help with that.

TIA.

Apparently, the notebook I ordered has WLAN capability already (although it is not mentioned in the technical specs), based on Intersil's Prism (dont know yet if thats integrated or by means of PCMCIA-card. If its b only I would hope it is card based so that I can easily upgrade it later, if it is b/g i dont really care what it is as long as it works.

I will let you know as soon I have my hands on it and will bother you with setup-support then.

actually all the wifi mfgrs are supposed to work all they same and eventually probably will but they all are having teething pains with the transition from "leaky" wep to wpa/tkip.

<wifi mfgrs don't matter>

Maybe my situation is unique because the wireless router is in a separate building (room in back of garage, 15' from main house), but here's what I found w.r.t. brands:
1. A DLINK 'B' router with 2 antennas + "Network Everywhere" PCMCIA 'B' card worked OK until I connected a Siemans passive directional antenna to the router, then it worked good.
2. Bought a NETGEAR 'G' router which had a proprietary connection to a single antenna, and the signal was obviously weaker than the DLINK even before I connected the Siemens antenna, so I returned it and replaced with a LINKSYS G router.
3. The LINKSYS G router obviously has better signal strength than the original DLINK B router (Its in G/B mode, but I haven't tried a G wireless connection yet.)
4. A NETGEAR 'G' PC card was tried and worked very poorly compared to the Network Everywhere card, with either the NETGEAR router or the LINKSYS router, so it was returned. In fact, in G mode with the NETGEAR G router, it kept disconnecting and would NEVER reconnect on its own, no matter how much I twiddled with the settings.

So at this point I haven't had much success with NETGEAR. I'm waiting for another brand of 'G' PC card to go on sale. If you have a shorter distance with not too many walls to go through, it might be OK.

Set up reasonable security on it, unless you are 100% sure that no one will snoop the radio frequency. Defining your security level is the important item that you need to think about, if you have questions I can help with that.

I have a DLlink 624 working now with the book 54Mbit - no security set.
May I come back to your offer now? What would you recommend irt security?
