nerd,

The following underlined paragraph is from my notes on the subject with CTO Huff:

"The 5.8ghz spectrum is free and is very clean in Mexico. We use that free spectrum for backhaul. The HotZone is based on a belief that you maintain a short distance between you and the customer, thereby eliminating the need for CPE. CPE (customer premise equipment) makes up over 80% of the cost of deploying a wireless network. Since we are not shooting across town, we can use free spectrum like 2.4 and 5.8 very effectively."

(helpful diagram)
Go to this link and scroll to page 13 to see the point to multi-point HotZone operation...

(from November 29th PR)
"This first phase of network deployment includes 15 sites containing HotZone 4010s broadcasting both 5.8 GHz point-to-multipoint connections and the redistribution of standard Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz providing broadband internet access. This network rollout illustrates the cost efficiency of the HotZone 4010 by broadcasting a standard 802.11b signal resulting in a Wi-Fi "cloud" allowing homes in the area access to broadband Internet service using an ordinary laptop or computer with a standard Wi-Fi card or adapter."
