I just want to pile on regarding the erasure issue. It tends to be shortchanged here vis a vis encryption, but it may be more important.

INSTANT ERASE or repurposing is VERY USEFUL AND VERY IMPORTANT.

One of the areas I've developed some knowledge of in the last two years is the basics of computer forensics. getting rid of bits and bytes totally is almost impossible. For example, under a microscope a disc drive that has had a hole drilled in it can be read one bit at a time to recover evidence.

More importantly, if you want to pass YOUR machine onto a neice or nephew -- you probably don't want them to retain access to minor stuff you don't even remember or know is on the drive.

Encryption provides the solution in both cases to repurposing with no chance of the drive giving away informaation.

Obviously, this will make it harder to find people storing pornography as well as criminals......but I'd bet that there's a big consumer market for the kind of privacy that Seagate is about to offer.
