By this time next year Cray will be emphasizing on their newest "Red Storm" based MPPs and when these come SGI will hardly prosper undisturbed
Unlike SGI which is clearly focusing on Altix and IPF based follow-on products, Cray's future Opteron line is secondary both in thinking and in lucrativeness to its flagship X1 box and its X1E successor and more susceptible to pricing pressure from competitors.
"We anticipate that the product line based on the Red Storm system, which is targeted for markets now largely served by clustered systems, generally will have lower margins than our vector-based products due to a more competitive market."
By this time next year Cray will be emphasizing on their newest "Red Storm" based MPPs and when these come SGI will hardly prosper undisturbed.
Cray may not even be around next year. It will likely just fail for about the fourth time.
The Cray balance sheet shows $24 M down $20 M from a year ago. Its current liabilities are $57 M and it has a strange entry in liabilities for $15 M in accrued payroll. What is that, bounced paychecks to employees?
Perhaps AMD can give some free Opterons and some free money to AMD so it can meet its payroll until next year.
