Yes, it is a weird feeling. Apparently if you're in a big one, your first thought is that it's you, not something external to you.

Once in Italy, I'd had a friend from the States over to dinner for Easter, since neither of us had anything else to do. After we'd finished, we were sitting in the living room drinking wine and making idle conversation. He asked me, "Have you ever felt you were in acute physical danger?"

And suddenly the chandelier began to sway. There was a rumbling noise, and some shaking. He said, "Um, that wasn't the tram passing by, was it?" Clearly it wasn't.

It was instead the huge Naples earthquake of the late '80s. Did an enormous amount of damage, and was felt more than 500 miles away.
