Before the collision, the ship’s crew notified authorities that the vessel had lost power. That “mayday” allowed Maryland Transportation Authority Police on the highway above to prevent many cars from driving onto the bridge just before the catastrophe.
BREAKING: Tugboats were released from the ship 17 minutes before impact with the #baltimorebridge . A tug escort was not required for the transit but was offered. Two pilots were aboard at the time. One a graduate of @UsmmaO and one a graduate of @MaritimeCollege
Asked Jay if the tugs still had the ship if they could have avoided the collision considering the time. The answer is "probably". Even with main engine failure they would have been able to steer it to a certain extent. He is betting that the tug escort will be required in the future.
