Penis Fish, South Korea
Sometimes it’s hard to know what people were thinking when they named a certain animal. This is not one of those cases. The gaebul, a mudflat-dwelling invertebrate also known as a marine spoon worm, looks alarmingly like the human male member. And just like various phallic-shaped vegetables, the penis fish is reported to give its namesake a boost.
For most diners, however, gaebul’s main appeal lies in its sweet taste and chewy texture. In South Korea, they’re typically served raw, often doused in a dipping sauce of gochujang and vinegar or, more simply, with sesame oil and salt.
