Chronic Wasting Disease appears to be caused by a prion protein similar in transmissibility among deer and related mammalian species.

Prion protein illnesses in humans include Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease (CJD) and Kuru Disease (big yuk) in humans, mad cow disease in cattle (Bovine Spongiform disease) and scrapie in sheep. Many microscopic features of Alzheimer Disease brain tissue studied postmortem show similarities.

Can it be transmitted to human? So far not yet, but people are warned not to take the deer for meat as a species jump has been seen in "Mad Cow Disease."

Interesting disease group worth reading about. It is caused by "misfolded" protein that can cause replication of the protein and ultimately disabling accumulation in brain. Histology of the affected brains shows microholes where brain cells have died.
