Yup, if there is a short squeeze it will be over soon and the time to take some profit too as an $AVXL shareholder.

I guess though that while I would appreciate such a price spike, I remain somewhat sceptical on it happening.

A trading squeeze is different than a prolonged investment squeeze. If institutions accumulate—as opposed to traders running it up and taking profits—the short contingent would be stuck, after shooting more ammo trying to stop the bleed. It all would depend on who is buying, and why.
