Yankees castoff is lifting Phillies sluggers to historic home-run heights in postseason

Before the Yankees made a deal with the baseball devil and decided to go ALL IN on analytics, their last championship team employed a hitting coach who sprinkled some old-school philosophies into his teachings even though he’d never been a big leaguer.

With Kevin Long running the show from 2007-14, the Yankees led the American League in runs scored three times and finished second twice. Also, Alex Rodriguez won the last of his three MVPs, Robinson Cano hit .300 six times and Derek Jeter went to the All-Star Game seven times in his final eight seasons.

Best of all, with Long the hitting coach on Joe Girardi’s staff, the Yankees won their 27th World Series in 2009.

The last few years, the Yankees could have used a hitting coach like Long, who never been all about launch angles and exit velos like the recent-days Yankees, who were practically dead this season by the time they finally hit the panic button at the All-Star break and fired Dillon Lawson as hitting coach.
