My problem with MM'S etc is that when they sell millions of shares they don't own, to supposedly stabilize a market, they are really supposed to gradually buy back those shares in a reasonable amount of time. When they don't, effectively, they are creating millions of shares that the company is not paid for, and generally act to keep share prices lower.

If they are successful in keeping the price down, if they don't put the company out of business, they eventually buy the excess shares at a substantial profit. I don't believe that this is the function of an MM, but by being combined with hedge funds, etc. it is the function they are doing.
